Music

Recordings, performances, field recordings, and the places that changed the way I listened.

Photograph shot by Michele Malea on black-and-white film in Villa Borghese, Rome.

I think of music less as performance than as a way of listening. Some pieces begin with a place, some with a conversation, some with a chord that refuses to resolve. The notebook gathers the traces of that process: scores, recordings, rehearsals, collaborations, and the acoustics of particular rooms.

Cliffside Goodbye

Composition · Short Film Score · Collaboration

Cliffside Goodbye

A piece written for a short film about two samurai facing each other on a cliff, in collaboration with Japanese shinobue player Sarah Akiyoshi. A melody written in Rome becomes something else when it passes through another human being across the world.

Syurga Selvaggio

Composition · Minimalism · Short Film Score

Syurga Selvaggio

A piece written for a short film and recorded, then set aside. Heard again after many years, the music had outlasted its original purpose. Some compositions are not completed when they are recorded; they are completed when they find the image they have been waiting for.

Fortressa

Ensemble · Puglia

Fortressa

Rehearsals and recording sessions in Puglia: arrangements written and revised across years, field recordings made between performances, and the slow evolution of a shared musical language between six musicians who did not set out to form a band.

From the Notebook

Three notebook chapters trace my relationship with the sape—from the first sound, to the instrument I brought home, to a winter afternoon in Rome when another artist photographed that relationship into memory.

Villa Borghese, Winter

Villa Borghese, Winter

A winter afternoon with Michele Malea and his Rolleiflex. The moment the sape became part of my physical language, photographed by a friend who knew how to listen through a camera.

The Sape I Brought Home

The Sape I Brought Home

Watching Mathew Ngau Jau carve an instrument from a single piece of timber, and understanding that I was entering into a relationship with its maker, its place, and its tradition.

The Sound of Rooms

The Sound of Rooms

Recording inside the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. A room is never silent; it is always doing something with the sound that enters it.

Every composition begins somewhere—with a place, a conversation, a chord that refuses to resolve. What you hear is the result. What you see here is the thinking.
